Butler, man.... Butler. They're becoming the miracle children of college basketball. Credit experience, or inside play or even Brad Stevens' glasses, but these guys turn it on in the postseason.

In upsetting the No. 1 Pitt Panthers today, the Bulldogs reached the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in program history. For a team that had to win the Horizon League auto-bid to get to the Big Dance a year after reaching the final game, the breaks just keep falling their way.

Some viewers questioned the officials' decision to call either of the two late fouls in such a close game, but league supervisor of officials John Adams appeared on CBS shortly after the game ended and assured viewers that the fouls were properly called.

The bigger question, and the one both head coaches will no doubt hammer their kids with in the future is "what the heck was anyone doing fouling in either of those scenarios?" Butler had the lead with 2.2 seconds left, and should have been playing D and forcing a tough jumpshot. After the missed free throw, the odds of Matt Howard doing anything but heaving the ball in the air were pretty much nil, so why foul him?

Then again, that's March Madness for you.

There was still time on the clock. It was definetely a foul. So it has to be called.
At  a later game where Arizona and Texas played, a similar situation occurred, but the clock had experied, and no foul was called.
The officialls got it right in both situations. The refs have been excellent in these games.

Easy to Overlook

For some who have witnessed Butler for years, their results in the tourney are not outlandish.  Butler is not a newcomer.  Butler has been building a sustainable program since the days when Barry Collier was the head coach, and he is now the AD at Butler.  Brad Stephens is a fantastic coach, but he also has a fantastic supporting cast at the university.  Oh, by the way, anyone take notice that Thad Matta, Ohio State coach, is also a Butler Alum and former head coach.

If you think they are the "Cinderella" story, get ready....they have a warehouse full of glass slippers for years to come.

Boy I really hate to agree with a Yankee fan, but in this scenario I just have too.  My question is why were the Pitt's players even lining up for the 2nd FT.  If he misses just accept OT.  Stand back forget rebounding and 99.9% of the risk is gone.  A full court heaver is the only thing that could beat you at that point.

Does anyone remember the Officials who bowed out of the Big East tournament just a couple weeks ago and why they left? Why question the officiating just make the freethrows (Pitt) and you win.

I have to disagree with you and I don't have a horse in this race either.  If it's a foul, you have to call it.  If it's questionable, don't call it.  These two late fouls weren't questionable at all.  They both were clear fouls.  Stupid fouls I must add but they were fouls.  Therefore the refs have to call it if they catch it.  Disclaimer:  I have played sports my entire life.

Both fouls were so obvious they had to be called.  I still don't understand why the Pitt guy hammered a guy who had position on the rebound.   It's like he didn't know the score.  They were tied going to overtime if he doesn't foul.  If Pitt makes their free throws, they win.  Simple as that.  As much as Butler played well, Pitt lost this game.  When is Dixon on the hot seat for not winning big games in the Dance?  Has to be frustrating for Pitt fans every year.

@theknightman - Dude! 60 MINUTES???  Really??  Obviously, you either were really hammered when you posted that comment or just haven't unlocked your brain from football season.

Dude!! Really? You HAVE to make that call?? Did they make it consistently for 39 1/2 minutes prior? Did they? There were 13 fouls called in the first half - and only 21 in the 2nd. Pitt wasn't in the double bonus until Brown went to the line with 1.4 left.  The difference between the two fouls at the end was that Brown was pushed out of bounds..
