HOUSTON – Patrick Sellers could be jealous. He could hold a grudge; he could have ill will towards his former colleagues and players.

But the former Connecticut assistant coach was just as happy as the current coaching staff after the Huskies won the national title.

“I’m happy, man,” Sellers said after the game. “I recruited a lot of the kids, so I know them, I know their families.”

Sellers resigned in May after the NCAA’s investigation of Connecticut, and spent the past season as an assistant coach for the Shanxi Dragons in China.

Some looked at him as a scapegoat, while others thought he might root against head coach Jim Calhoun. Sellers does not think negatively of the program at all, though.

“All that other stuff, it had to happen,” he said.

While he was a world away from Storrs and the excitement of a national championship run, Sellers doesn’t feel left out.

“I feel like I’m a part of it,” he said. “I feel great.”
