Another Division I head-coaching job has unexpectedly opened up in early May.
Navy head coach Billy Lange (right) has decided to leave his post at Navy and rejoin Villanova coach Jay Wright's staff, the school announced Monday afternoon.
"Being the head coach of Navy basketball has truly been and will always be one of the highest honors of my life," Lange said in a statement. "Above all, in light of what our great country accomplished eight days ago, it has been awe inspiring to be a part of developing our nation's future leaders through the passion and oneness of Navy basketball."
The 39-year-old Lange coached at Navy for seven years, compiling a 132-132 record. Prior to his arrival to Annapolis, Md., in 2004, Lange was on the Villanova coaching staff. His return will earn him the title of associate head coach, according to a FoxSports.com's report. Lange is from Haddon Heights, N.J., so the move back home makes sense on his behalf, but it also should benefit Wright, who has a tremendous rapport with Lange, as the two worked together at Vilanova for three years prior to Lange taking the Navy job in the spring of 2004.
Some believe this move is an indication that Lange is seen as a successor for Wright at Villanova, if and when Wright were to leave the school.
