Is Roy Williams afraid to play in Madison?

"We don't need no stinking Badgers," Roy Williams never said.

When the ACC/Big Ten matchups came out, the announcement stuck in one man's craw. Wedged itself in there sideways, apparently.

Not that having a glottal obstruction stopped former Wisconsin AD Pat Richter from speaking. Oh no, he spoke.

Annoyed that the game between Wisconsin and UNC will not be played in Madison, Richter told WTLX-FM exactly what he thinks of Carolina's head coach. "I know darn well that you'll never get Roy Williams here. He won't come to Wisconsin; he's afraid the people are going to boo him and everything else. I think that's all bogus," Richter said.

Website Madison.com further expounded on Richter's agita:

In comments taped for his weekly radio show on WTLX-FM/100.5 and made public in advance of air time, Richter takes the Challenge's scheduling process to task. And he asserts that Williams, who remains an unpopular character locally a decade after ripping the Badgers' style of play in their 2000 Final Four appearance, "won't come to Madison" and ensures that aim by unduly influencing the decision-makers at ESPN and the respective conferences.

Richter notes that after the UW-UNC matchup was bypassed in the first 12 editions of the Challenge, it finally comes to pass at a time when a loaded North Carolina team will open the season in the Top 5.

If Williams is concerned about the possibility of being booed, he is right to be. His comments about the slow-down style preferred by the Badgers in 2000 have stayed under the skin of several Wisconsinites. Williams was booed in 2002 when Kansas played at the Kohl Center for the Midwest Regional. That wasn't even a direct matchup of the two teams.

Big-time basketball coaches know how to showcase their teams. Whether Williams was able to turn things his way or not, that's the way it looks to fans in Madison. Ol' Roy's going to take some heat, whether he likes it or not.

The trick, for the UNC athletic department, is going to be keeping Williams from firing back. The UNC coach has a reputation for being thin-skinned and publicly combative with those who say things he doesn't like to hear. There may yet be more fireworks in the offing.

Jordan Taylor anyone???  Great point guard...will me lucky to sniff the top of the 2nd round in next year's NBA draft.
Ridiculous statement, that has nothing to do with the coach or the system he plays in. Quite honestly I doubt Jordan would have developed his game had he played elsewhere. It all has to do with the fact that he doesn't have much potential for the NBA because he's already maxed it all out. Almost as stupid as what the Yankee fan said.

I totally agree that watching a Wisconsin basketball game is like watching paint dry. The game that they played in the NCAA tourney this year was an embarassment. Ryan does get good recruits to go there and everyone buys into his system and they are a top 25 team every year. If I was a top recruit, I would go somewhere that I get to showcase my talents and show that I can compete in the NBA. He puts the reigns on anyone that has an offensive game. If you are a role player and have no aspirations of competeing at the next level, this is not a bad school. I don't balme Roy for not wanting to play there. He probably does not want to play Wisconsin period. It is very ugly!!!
That couldn't be farther from the truth, maybe you should actually get a clue before talking out his ass.

Pat Richter has no reason to lie about this, he probably is telling the truth, and honestly I don't see the big deal of this. UNC will likely win by 10 or so when they play next year, but Wisconsin has been slighted multiple times in this challenge.

Is Roy Williams afraid to play in Madison?

I'm a Badger fan and I will say right now UNC wins by at least 10....they should, with the McD's AA's running around. I'm also rather embarrassed by these comments. Either say something 10 years ago and keep it in house. It belittles the program that's worked hard to gain national recognition. This is a bush-league move by a program starved for attention, not a well-established and respected team.

You cannot dismiss one thing: Bo Ryan is 136-11 at home. I'm sure Coach K has told Roy he wants no part of that.

Is Roy Williams afraid to play in Madison?

Let's face facts Roy wins on talent alone, if he could really coach he would have won a dozen NCAA championships by now. UNC's Parade All-Americans will out play the two and three star athletes at Wisconsin. Bo will out coach Roy. Switch coaches for a season or two and Roy will have another nice run in the NIT and Bo will have TWO National Titles.

Roy said that Wisconsin's offense is painful to watch/play in, huh?

Pretty sure J.P. Tokoto was thinking the saaame thing when he committed to Carolina over his state school UW.

Go Heels.

I'm next to certain that the only place Roy is scared to play is the NIT.
