In a shocking coaching move, Penn State head coach Ed DeChellis is leaving the Nittany Lions for the vacant coaching job at Navy, sources confirmed to Gary Parrish of

The story was first reported by Dana O’Neil of

DeChellis will replace Billy Lange, who left to become the associate head coach at Villanova.

"It's been a very, very dificult weekend for me and my family. If I break down, there's good reason for that," DeChellis said at a news conference Monday afternoon. "Penn State is a special place for me and my family, but I found another special place in the U.S. Naval Academy."

By leaving Penn State, DeChellis leaves a bigger conference, a bigger school – and a bigger paycheck. David Jones of The Patriot-News reported that DeChellis was making $650,000 at Penn State, but will dip down to $450,000 at the Naval Academy.

"This is a great job ... a Big Ten job with Big Ten facilities. We've got all the bells and whistles," DeChellis said. "But to me, it's not about the bells and whistles. It's not about the large arenas anymore."

DeChellis went 222-232 in eight seasons at Penn State, reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time this past March.

Ed DeChellis leaves Penn State for Navy

People can say how great of a move this is for DeChellis, which I agree with. He wasn't getting Penn State past Ryan, Painter, Matta, Izzo, Weber, or Beilein anytime soon. But if Penn State basketball was bad before, this just looks terrible. Though coming from my point of view, I still find this hilarious. How does a Big Ten school with all the money each school receives, lose their coach to a Patriot League school? Even if it is an esteemed school like Navy. This just shows how little PSU cares about basketball in general. If they weren't willing to spend extra to keep the guy who just took them to the NCAA tournament, I can't imagine who the next guy they bring in will be. Why would you want to coach there when clearly basketball is way down on the list in the mind of the athletic department.

Is it the fan support? PSU can fill a 100,000+ seat stadium for football, but it can't fill it's arena for basketball? Big Ten, while slow and painfully boring, is still a top-notch conference. That alone should be enough to bring fans out to support the team.

Is it tradition? Uh...what tradition?

Is it location? State College is in the middle of nowhere and unlike football, PSU isn't going to be able to get the best players in state with programs like Pitt, Villanova, and Temple to compete against in recruiting.

The program is at a major crossroads. If the AD actually cares, he needs to make a good hire. The bottom feeders of the past few seasons (Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern) are going to get better. Nebraska is good enough to be middle of the pack in conference. PSU can't fall behind or it's going to be another decade before the Lions get back to the NCAA tournament.

As a Navy man from Syracuse I'm kind of torn here. I want to believe that the Academy knows what they are doing but to hire someone from Penal State home of the ahole JoPa. I just don't know.

Penn States next basketball coach will be Black. They havent been able to recruit anyone from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh which is bad considering the wealth of talent available. Without being able to get their share from those cities, Penn St will struggle to contend.

Who's next at Penn State?

I'll mention two names for this job:

Joe Dooley (assistant at Kansas)

Mike Dunlap (assistant at St. Johns)

Both have solid head coaching experience elsewhere.
