Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

PONTE VERDA BEACH, Fla. – The Big East Conference men's basketball coaches voted Tuesday to allow all 17 teams to compete in the league’s tournament starting in 2012.

The coaches’ recommendations at the league’s spring meetings still must be approved by the athletic directors and then voted on by the league’s presidents before becoming official.

With TCU joining the league for the 2012-13 school year, the basketball membership will grow from 16 to 17 teams. There was some thought that the league might opt to only allow the top 12 teams to play in Madison Square Garden for the Big East tournament. That’s how the tournament was restructured from 2006-08 until the league allowed all 16 teams to advance to New York beginning with the 2009 tournament.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun said if he was the Big East's commissioner he would want a 12-team tournament, but as a coach he preferred all 17 teams playing in the tournament.

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

Ah yes the "Big East is a joke", except for the fact that the 9th place team in the league, who went 9-9 in conference play, rolled its way to the National Title!!  Yea, what a joke the Big East is.

What a dope!

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

The Big East is a joke and they are exposed every NCAA tourney when they all fold like dominoes. UConn was an exception to the rule this year. Next year will be more of the same where more of the Big East is bounced by the end of the first weekend, even though they all got great seeds and came in with gaudy records.

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

Ask the average fan where the ACC, PAC 10, SEC, BIG 10 and BIG 12 tournaments were played last season. Outside of their own conference of interest, they could NOT tell you where the others were played. Ask ANY college basketball fan where the Big East tourney was played, and ALL of them could answer correctly. The Big East is the Goliath of basketball, ratings and otherwise.

Ha ha ha, gotta love these writters. dont they have a proofing department? the town is PONTE VEDRA BEACH FLA......Big east has always been a strong conference, so adding another one and making it 17 but still only allow the top 12 to go into MSG and battle it out....

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

The big east schedule is a tough 2-3 months and then the big east tournament and then the big dance.....no wonder the teams are dragging in the NCAA tournament.

Except for the team that played every round of the B.E. tournament and won the National Championship.  Give that worn out excuse for choking against USF and VCU (I meant George Mason) a rest.

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

I don't mind a tourney field that big as long as you weed out the bottom 8-9 teams without making the top 5-6 play any extra games. The big east schedule is a tough 2-3 months and then the big east tournament and then the big dance.....no wonder the teams are dragging in the NCAA tournament.

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

Hell, just put everybody on the upper East Coast in the Big Least Tournament....
Or if you're a Big 10 fan, what does it feel like to never win the title. I mean 2000 was the last Big 11 title. How many times can OSU choke? I mean penn State in the conference final? Their coach thought so highly of the program he took less money to coach in the freakin' Patriot League. Too funny.

How's your ACC doing buddy? What they get 5 teams? 11 teams in and the NCAA CHAMPION. The best rated conference in 2011, the most teams in the tournament ever & the champion. A clean sweep.

The Big 2 in the ACC took a backseat this year. The rest of the ACC is a flatout joke.

Big East on verge of 17-team tournament?

Even without the tournament, a college player would play at MSG at least twice in their career since St. John's plays their home games there.  If you ditch 1 team, I bet it would have little impact on recruiting.  Any kid worth recruiting won't want to go to a team that finishes last in the BE anyway.
