Big 12 Offseason Rundown

I did these at my old space and people have been e-mailing me asking if I could put them together again, so here goes. The offseason rundowns of each BCS program – starting with the Big 12.

Big 12 Offseason Report

Baylor – Baylor will be taking a trip to Toronto from Aug. 11-16. Assistant Mark Morefield was forced to resign and was replaced by alum Grant McCasland, who was the head coach at Abilene Christian. The Bears will play in the Las Vegas Classic (12-22/23) and also have non-conference games against Mississippi State (12-28 in Dallas), vs. San Diego State (11-15), at Northwestern (12-4) and at BYU (12-17). Three players - Nolan Dennis, Stargell Love and Dragan Sekelja – transferred out while the Bears added Centenary’s Logan Lowery as a walk-on. BC transfer Brady Heslip will be eligible at the start of the year while Gary Franklin (Cal) will be eligible in December.

Iowa State – Fred Hoiberg and his team will travel to Italy from Aug. 9-19. Assistants Bobby Lutz (N.C. State) and Elwyn McCroy (Hutchinson JC) were replaced by Cornell Mann (Dayton) and Matt Abdelmassih, who was promoted. Micah Byars was brought on from Central Florida as the director of player development. The Cyclones will play in South Padre Island Invitational and also have non-conference games vs. Northern Iowa (11-30), at Michigan (12-3), and vs. Iowa (12-9). Eric McKnight (Florida Gulf Coast) and Calvin Godfrey (Howard JC) transferred out while Will Clyburn (Utah) and Korie Lucious (Michigan State) transferred in. Four players sat out last season and will be eligible this year: Royce White, Chris Allen, Anthony Booker and Chris Babb. 

Kansas – Video coordinator Kyle Keller left for an assistant spot at Texas A&M. The Jayhawks will play in the Maui Invitational and also against Kentucky on Nov. 15 in the Champions Classic in NYC. Bill Self’s team also has non-league games against South Florida (12-3), vs. Ohio State (12-10), vs. Davidson (12-19 in KC) and at USC (12-22). Royce Woolridge transferred to Washington State and walk-on Justin Wesley will be eligible this season after transferring from Lamar.

Kansas State – Lamont Evans was promoted and takes the spot vacated by Dalonte Hill (Maryland). Frank Martin’s team will play in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii from Dec. 22-25 and also has non-conference games at Virginia Tech (12-4), against West Virginia (12-8 in Wichita) and against Alabama (12-17 in KC). Freddy Asprilla (Canisius), Wally Judge (Rutgers), Nick Russell (SMU) and Juevol Myles transferred out of the program.

Missouri – Frank Haith’s new staff is Ernie Nestor, Tim Fuller, Isaac Chew and Toby Lane (DBO). The Tigers will play in the CBE Classic and also play Villanova on Dec. 6 in the Jimmy V Classic in NYC. Missouri will also face Illinois on Dec. 22 in St. Louis. Three players transferred into the program: Earnest Ross (Auburn), Keion Bell (Pepperdine) and George Goode (Louisville), who will be eligible to play this season.

Oklahoma – Lon Kruger brought Steve Henson, Lew Hill and Mike Shepherd with him from UNLV – and added Chris Crutchfield (Oral Roberts). The Sooners will play in the 76 Classic in Anaheim and also face Arkansas (12-10) at home, play at Cincinnati (12-29) and also face Houston (12-17) in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City. Amath M’Daye will sit out after transferring in from Wyoming.

Oklahoma State – Travis Ford & Co. will play in the Preseason NIT and also against New Mexico on Dec. 17 in Oklahoma City in the All-College Classic. The Cowboys will also play against Virginia Tech (12-31) and against UAB (12-21). Roger Franklin (North Texas) and Jarred Shaw both left the program.

Texas – Rodney Terry left to become the head coach at Fresno and was replaced by Rob Lanier, who returns after a stint at Florida. The Longhorns will play in the Legends Classic in New Jersey on Nov. 19 and 21 – and also have non-conference games at UCLA (12-3), vs. Temple (12-17) and at UNC (12-21).

Texas A&M – New coach Billy Kennedy, whose team will go to France and Switzerland from Aug. 8-17, has hired Glynn Cyprien (Memphis) and Kyle Keller, a former Oklahoma State assistant who was the video coordinator at Kansas. The Aggies will play in the Coaches vs. Cancer event from Nov. 17-18 in NYC and also have a non-league game at Florida (12-17) in the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise. Elston Turner (Washington) sat out last season and should make an impact for the Aggies this year.

Texas Tech – Billy Clyde Gillispie hired Chris Walker and retained Chris Beard, but Beard parted ways – and Clyde brought Bubba Walker back on board (although it’s not known what position Walker will fill). The Red Raiders will play in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando and will also play TCU in a non-league game. Paul Cooper and Jamel Outler (UT Arlington) left the program.
