World University Team trimmed to 14

The USA Basketball Men’s World University Games team was paired down to 14 players – with two more cuts expected in the next week.

Most of the names are of the familiar variety – except for maybe Yale big man Greg Mangano.

Purdue’s Matt Painter will coach the team, which will practices twice per day until Aug. 7 before departing for China on Aug. 8. The World University Games begins on Aug. 13 in China.

Here’s the list of the 14 players still fighting for spots:

Guards

Marcus Denmon, Missouri
Ashton Gibbs, Pittsburgh
Scoop Jardine, Syracuse
John Jenkins, Vanderbilt
Orlando Johnson, UC Santa Barbara
Ray McCallum, Detroit
Shabazz Napier, UConn

Forwards

Tim Abromaitis, Notre Dame
Draymond Green, Michigan State
Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota
Darius Miller, Kentucky
Aaric Murray, West Virginia

Centers

JaMychal Green, Alabama
Greg Mangano, Yale

Here are the six players who were cut from the team:

Yancy Gates, Cincinnati
C.J. McCollum, Lehigh
Khris Middleton, Texas A&M
Tony Mitchell, Alabama
John Shurna, Northwestern
