By Jeff Goodman

If you haven’t already heard, podcasts are all the rage these days.

Well, at least that’s what everyone tells me, anyway.

So my colleague, Gary Parrish, and I decided to break into the podcast business and we taped our first installment on Thursday.

As usual, he was long-winded – yet, I have to admit, semi-entertaining. I was, of course, entertaining and informative.

We covered a variety of topics – from Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his phone call to John Calipari and his apparent shot at Coach K. We weighed in on Bruce Pearl and his job offer and I also made it clear that there will be a major overhaul of Parrish’s Top 25 (and one).

We’ll try to do these every couple weeks in the offseason and then weekly once the season gets going. If anyone has any suggestions on an upgrade for a co-host, please let me know.

And someone let Tom Izzo know we’ll also revamp the Preseason Top 25 soon - and that his Spartans will be where they belong.

College Hoops Podcast: Parrish and Goodman

Gold star to anyone who listens all the way through! Ok, there is no issue with coach K or Bruce Pearl in the NBDL. But there is this very long analysis/scorn of Kansas' roster that I question. Part of the reason I question it is that we heard nearly the same scorn last year when Kansas was picked 5th in the Big XII. Of course they dominated the league and won the championship for the 7th time.

My own observation incudes these facts: coach Self has always recruited a full roster of talent. So players may get some spot minutes behind some of the very good players there until their own turn comes. When it does come they seem to be ready. You guys lauded Thomas Robinson on this tape. The year before you would have scoffed at the idea that he would be a key player. Somewhat the same story the year before when Marcus Morris had played some behind Cole Aldridge but Markieff was mostly ignored. And then Markieff dominated and was even drafted before Marcus (1 space in the lottery.) The other factor you are missing is that Bill Self does not want pressure on a very young team. So he will talk you down. He seems to be willing, even with a very young team, to play some very highly ranked teams in preseason. It gets his team ready for the conference in January. By then he will have an experienced team.

Is it about future NBA talent? If so why didn't Baylor win the Big XII last year (they were dominated at home by Kansas)? I do agree that you do not ignore a Tom Izzo team. For even more reasons (history) you do not ignore a Bill Self team. Both of them will be ready to rock and roll. Both belong in the top 25 and this early that is about as close as we get to getting the top 10 teams at the end of the season - that they are somewhere in the top 25 by now.
