Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Wow.

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

And still could not get past the Elite 8. FIVE FREAKIN PLAYERS in the first rd and all you have to show for it is an Elite 8 appearance. Are you fkiddin me? Stevie Wonder could have coached that team to a title.

vol u me-  I guess you never heard of the Fab5 that played for Michigan.  At that time they were the greatest class ever recruited and played together for 3 years and never won the championship.  I guess Stevie Wonder could have coach that tema to a title.

It speaks VOLUMES of what you know.  Make sure you give us another brillant display of your wisdom.

If you are naive enough to believe Calipari knew nothing about what was going on with Derrick Rose, then there is no hope for you.

And what in the world does Dana Kirk have to do with this ?? Stick to the Calipari issue.

"Stevie Wonder could have coached that team to a title."

Nope.  John Wooden, Dean Smith and Bobby Knight combined couldn't have coached that team to a title. Star Freshmen don't win National Championships.  How many years of basketball do have people have to watch to see this?!  EVERY FREAKING YEAR there are star one and done freshmen that cannot win 6 tourney games in a row.  Why?  Because it's HARD, and requires CONSISTENCY.  Seriously, if John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Kevin Durant, Michael Beasley, Kevin Love and Greg Oden couldn't do it, what makes this year's crop different?

Kentucky fans should accept that Calipari's recruiting style (get the best players in the country, support them to turn pro immediately, and recruit the next great batch by telling them that he can do the same thing for you) will get you the most exciting basketball team in the country, and rack up wins like no one else can.  But it will not win you championships.

Rick Pitino's National Championship and Final Four appearances still stand in the record books. They weren't eliminated by the NCAA for violations. Caliperi can't say the same. THAT is the big difference in the two men. Caliperi is NOT equal to Rick. That is why he hates Rick, andhis jealousy is so evident. I love Rick's comment. There's a reason he's been at Louisville 10 years, and will retire here. Let's see how long Caliperi is at UK; until he violates major NCAA regulations I suppose. Then he can leave UK with sanctions to deal with, and go on to another job that he "would crawl to get".

One quick comment about Pitino's mistake: He NEVER said it was a mistake taking the Louisville's job. He said he should have never left UK for Boston. Big difference! As far as Cal is concerned, when you have three yrs in a row of #1 recruiting classes & is on your way to what I think will be at minimum a top five class for this year, good for you. But to think that nothing is going on, I think is downright ignorance. But the Cats made their beds with Mitch, Cal and his "friends". Sooner than later you will reap what you sow. I want to asked UK fans if they are on the same page with their coach. Which would you rather have? Another NCAA title or would you like to have five guys drafted in the first round in the same year with no title?  Looking forward to the showdown this year, but I promise you, it will much closer than you think!
