It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told CBSSports.com on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

Wow.

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

Just because Memphis had no one to watch what was going on with Dana Kirk and if memory is correct Cal was not to blame in the last Memphis problem then Memphis needs to get someone to handle their Complaince Dept.

Pitino is a good coach, he has had success at three different schools (final four appearances with Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville) but he has only won it at once and that one time was at UK. "I ignore the jealous"? Really? I think if anyone is jealous at this point it is Pitino, he has said on numerous occassions that the biggest mistake he ever made was leaving UK (that's gotta sting huh Louserville fans) now Calipari comes to UK after a down period (much like Pitino did after Suttion) and within two years has already reached the final four and brings some of the top talent in the country year after year, including guys that were supposed to go to Louisville. UofL always has been and always will be second string in Kentucky basketball wise deep down Pitino knows this, the fans of UofL know this, the whole country knows this so let's get past it and you can hope and pray every year that your team upsets (and yes it will almost always be an upset) UK on a lucky day and wins some tournament games next year instead of being sent home by Morehead State!

And still could not get past the Elite 8. FIVE FREAKIN PLAYERS in the first rd and all you have to show for it is an Elite 8 appearance. Are you fkiddin me?
You make it sound like an Elite Eight appearance is easy.  If it is, why has Tennessee only made it to one Elite Eight?  Vol, I luv ya man, but don't talk poo about Kentucky basketball when your program is poo.  If you feel the need to talk poo, talk about Kentucky's poo football program!!!!

Rednecks huh. What about all the Louisville fans who try to act like there in a gang and there gay L signal that shows there so called affiliation. You can spot them pretty easily. Look for a white guy thats a wannabee cool guy with a chinstrap beard and weighs 150 pounds on a good day. Look for fat girls with them with shirts on that are 5 sizes to small and chinstrap beards and the fat guys with there shirts off with a chinstrap beard. When you see this combination there will be no doubt in your mind they are U of L fans. For someone who cant coach Cal sure as hell beat U of L the last 2 years as well as an elite 8 and final four. Nope cant coach at all. Dont bring your, look at all the talent he has had things Cawds fans love to do. At UMASS he never even had a ranked class and still to that mid major to the final four. It happend, deal with it. It was only at the end of his tenure at Memphis when he started getting ranked classes and the highest 1 was number 5 cause of D. Rose and Co. The other 2 or 3 classes that were ranked werent even in the top 10. Its only been at UK where he has got crazy talent and he took and NIT team and took them to the elite 8. He losses 5 players to the draft, his best player is ruled ineligable, Kanter, that leaves him with 6 players, 3 of which were freshman and made the final four beating overall number 1 ohio state and 2 UNC and losing to champ UCONN by 1 point. Wait till they play this year

To say no one cares about UK greatness is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. There is a whole state that with fans all across the united states. No one cares about U of L. Proof is everyone leaving the Big East and Pitino crying cause he knows no major conference wants them

And you obviously care cause of your stereo typical attack. Yep we are classless and you make those comments. Your coach is classless you dumb ass. When stereotypes are thrown out it means you have accepted you cant beat us on the court so you try to come back with anything you can. Stay classsy Cawds fans.

I noticed. And he's not the only one. There are two or three others who do nothing but attack the teams of other posters.

UKSMithsfan's reaction and replies to my posts are predictable. Instead of responding to the comment, he attacks the posters team, as if that has anything to with the price of eggs in China.

You are so right Vol u me. When the NCAA brings the walls down on the wildcats, many of these same UK fans will be cursing Calipari's name and ready to lynch him. Of course, he will bolt just before the sky falls and won't be anywhere near Big Blue Nation. I love the comments about "nothing was ever proven against Calipari". Let them all sleep. A rude awakening will come soon enough.

That was 14 years ago......which is an eternity
I am not a mathmatician but I know 14 years does not equal infinite time. Stick to the topic of this story, which has nothing to do with the team I pull for, instead of attacking my team, address what I was referring to about your fickle fans turning on Pitino after he left, turning on Tubby. All you defending Cal will be acting like you never liked him either once he gets a whiff of the NCAA snooping around and he bolts. How can ANYONE honestly think he is a stand-up guy when not ONE but TWO schools had their seasons revoked, while HE was the head coach? "Oh, he knew nothing about it" or my favorite, "he has never had anything pinned to him". Give me a freaking break. This guy is so slimy, he glides when he walks. I cannot wait until the NCAA comes down on him, hopefully this time, teflon John will get what he desrves, and honestly I dont wish any ill will towards UK but every dog has his day and it's only a matter of time before it happens to your douche-canoe of a coach.

Funny how soon UK fans forget. Wasn;t that long ago you all were on Pitino's jock like a pair of Fruit-of-the-Looms.

Wasn't that long ago???? Really? That was 14 years ago......which is an eternity.....but, Tennessee had Jerry Green, some guy who was Michael Jordan's former roommate, and a cheater as their head coach, and they STILL never managed to win the SEC Tournament. Kentucky had their down years, but still managed to win the SEC Tournament SEVERAL years......and owned Bruce Pearl.....

Jodie Meeks ring a bell?

Tennessee SUCKS!!!
