Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

It was only a matter of time.

Just a few days after Kentucky coach John Calipari's verbal jab directed squarely at Pitino and Louisville, the Cards' head coach fired back.

"Four things I've learned in my 59 years about people," Pitino told on Wednesday. "I ignore the jealous, I ignore the malicious, I ignore the ignorant and I ignore the paranoid."

"If the shoe fits anyone," he added. "Wear it."

To refresh your memory, here are Calipari's comments earlier in the week in which he purposely omits Louisville when talking about programs in the state of Kentucky.

"It's a unique thing," Calipari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State, California has UCLA, North Carolina has Duke. It's Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that's what makes us unique."

This is why the Kentucky-Louisville rivalry currently has no peer in college hoops.

At least while Pitino and Calipari run their respective programs.

It edges out the one with closer proximity down in Tobacco Road between Duke and North Carolina. Not due to the hatred between fan bases, because that exists at a similar level in Bluegrass country.

But because of the hatred of the two coaches who run the programs.

Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams aren't exactly partners, but those guys are buddies compared to Calipari and Pitino.

Louisville Courier-Journal columnist Rick Bozich touched upon Calipari's jealousy in a column this morning and there's certainly some merit to his points.

It's no coincidence that Calipari accepted the job to coach the Dominican Republican national team shortly after Pitino agreed to (and later decided against) coach the Puerto Rican National club.

Calipari is envious of the fact that Pitino won a national championship.

Calipari is brash -- and even his closest friends in the business will tell you behind closed doors that he'll turn on anyone. I mean, think about the fact that Pitino was a key proponent in Calipari getting the UMass job years ago.

But that is ancient history now.

Pitino is nearing 60 and doesn't care what he says or who he offends these days.

A year ago, his team was over-matched talent-wise by Calipari's Wildcats. This year, although Kentucky remains loaded due to another stellar freshman class, the gap has closed significantly.

The two coaches will square off on New Year's Eve.

This makes for terrific theater, so grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Because it's not going to last forever.

Rick Pitino shoots back at John Calipari

God knows he can't coach.

You must be referring to Slick Rick here....He's been at Loserville for 9 years now. When he came to Loserville, he GUARENTEED a National Title.....and 9 years later, he has.....One Final Four, Two NITs and SEVERAL weekends where Loserville NEVER made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. But, the Loserville faithful are very quick to point out, when comparing Slick Rick and Coach Cal, that at least Slick Rick has a National Title.....15 years KENTUCKY'S head coach. HE DIDN'T WIN IT AT LOSERVILLE, SO STOP CLAIMING IT AS YOUR'S. Point is, Slick Rick's prime is OVER.....that's FACT. Coach Cal has ONLY been at Kentucky for 2 years, and he has gotten UK to an Elite 8 and a Final Four.....that's better that Slick Rick did in his first two years at Loserville.

It cracks me up that Kentucky fans have to make fun of the city of Louisville...because, you know, the state of Kentucky isn't the butt of every redneck, incest, sheep fornicating, cousin loving, dip-spittin' hillbilly joke. God forbd a part of this state tries to urbanize; we like the 21st century.

As far as the "there more UK fans in Louisville" argument, that's a straight lie. Latest poll results: 57% Louisville, 33% UK, 10% other.

Frankly, as a Card fan, I never notice UK until one of its ignorant fans feels obligated to give me a history of their program. I don't care what Slick Rick or PayPal Cal has to's clearly the fans that tick me off. I can't go anywhere and watch a Louisville game without one ignorant redneck spouting at the mouth about the greatness of one cares.

Of course, when you have a savy coach who is aware his fanbase is classless and arrogant, why not make stupid comments about being the only school in the state. If it pleases 90% of the hicks in this state, then congrats on being a good salesman; God knows he can't coach.

Pitino was a proponent of Cal's UMASS Job??

Though that was a popular account given by Pitino becuase the Counsel he gave to the UMASS trustees was behind closed doors. It's now common knowledge that story was actually opposite. Pitino, in fact, lobbyed against John, instead pushing for one of his own assistants. But when Pitino finally realized that the UMASS board was determined to go with Calipari no matter who Pitino suggested, Rick fell in line coming out ot the conference room claiming he had talked them into it . . . FACT!

2nd- There was the rumor that Pitino started whispering in the hear of confidants of Lou Carnaseca and fellow North East coaches about dipsarging comments that Calipari was saying behind Lou's back knowing that it would get back to Lou eventually so convaluted that the soucre would be lost, all of which in fact were untrue and later disproved. Pitino's true motive was to simply to alienate Calipari's NE recruiting and from the tight knit fratenity of North East Coaches that included Calhoun, Thompson,  Brown, Massamino and to a lesser degree, Valvano. In fact, as it has been recalled and recounted as of late, many of the assistants and coaches have said that the only dipsaraging comments they heard were creaed by Pitino himself. Though he never comments on their rivalry, Huggins knows the true stroy as well which is why you'll never hear Huggy say anything flattering about Pitino personally

And these are only the tips of the iceberg of what went on in the Northeast in the early 90's!  This is why, though Calhoun and Calipari don't dine together, they have a mutual respect for one another, the years have uncovered the truth which is why Calhoun now absolutely detest's Rick Pitino! Funny how the only coaches that really align themselves with Pitno are former assistants, and not all of them.

Jeff-If your going to write a good piece on the Calipari-Pitnio rivarly- write one that is compelling but true. This hatred goes farther back than UK-UL, Memphis-UL, or even UMASS-UK. This goes back to Pitino's Provendence days

Funny how soon UK fans forget. Wasn;t that long ago you all were on Pitino's jock like a pair of Fruit-of-the-Looms. Now look at you, "Pitino is a joke", "Pitino sucks"! Well, he still has more National Titles than Calipari. <waits for response: i.e. Bruce Pearl, Tennessee sucks, etc, etc.

Crybaby? Wow. That really hurts. There are over 11 pages on this thread, and if you look closely, you will find many defending him. But, you refuse the truth, so believe what you want. Also, this thread is no longer listed on CBSSports, well, the main story isn't, at least which would lead credence to why nobody else is posting....because, again, the story is GONE.

Now, get back to corn-holing yourself, Sparky.

I'll say goodbye now because i can't waste any more time with you.

That was what you said 5 posts ago or was it 15 posts ago.  Hell I lost count.  Your life must be very boring to keep repeating the same phrase.  Or maybe that is because of your ignorance that you mention, that other people seemed to have.   Slow day at work?????
