Coach K says schools leaving NCAA 'could happen'

From our Rapid Reports last night (and if you're wondering what Rapid Reports are, click here), Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski offered up an interesting quote about conference realignment and the somewhat unstable marriages of college and the NCAA.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski thinks if the NCAA wants to keep the top conferences, it needs to change its prospect contact rules.

“The old NCAA is no longer,” Krzyzewski said. “To go back can’t happen. The NCAA needs to change. I’d hate to see the top conferences not be a part of it, and that could happen.”
Many believe the big schools will one day shuffle away from the NCAA, once they have the money (read: power) to do so. When arguably the greatest coach in the history of the sport is talking like that's a possibility, the NCAA has a problem.

Today is ACC media day. I'm sure K may get asked about this once or twice.

Wooden wouldn't have been half as successful as he was had there not been a Louis Gilbert paying players behind his back!

John Wooden wouldn't be half as successful now-a-days with these insane rules that the NCAA has.  Period!!!

No, there is no argument. He isn't. John Wooden is and it's not even close.

You guys are insane I'm no fan of the NCAA however, if you think there is cheating now you better think again.  We would essentially have to create a entirely new enforment entity to stop teams like Alabama from giving out 100 scholarships every year.

And as much as people like to knock Non AQ teams this system would seriously fall apart without them to pad wins on. If teams broke of for football they could kiss their NCAA membership goodbye completely.  Their would be no more playing members of the NCAA so you would essentially see a slow death to sports like Track, Baseball, wrestling, etc.

This entity would lack moral credibility and parents would send their kids to the schools who still play in the NCAA.

So what do you think the outcome  would be if you combined the SEC with teams like Kentucky and the Big-12 with teams like the Jayhawks?

Just out of curiousity would that include ffootball too and get rid of the BCS computer generated title game and have playoffs to determine true champions? Just wondering.

It seems the NCAA is unnecessary.  I don't know why a group of schools like an existing conference or a couple of conferences wouldn't be able to agree on self-regulation and eliminate the NCAA from the money.  There can't be that many issues to agree on (revenue sharing, # of scholarships, #games, recruiting, contact, and workout guidelines, and penalties for not adhereing to the rules).   An exodus from the NCAA is not far-fetched if you add in an increase in revenue by eliminating the NCAA (even if there are new costs associated with self-regulation).  Self regulation is easy if the penalties are severe (i.e. getting kicked out of the group/money.)

The NCAA is a bunch of hypocrites disguising their greed behind the banner of the "student-athlete" ideal.

Hey Matt -- maybe if you were a good journalist you would ask him. Why does CBS just regurgitate quotes and articles written on other sites? Your entire site has become a BLOG.
Dude . . . you should see what they write over on yahoo.  It's even worse.

As much as I would love to see the NCAA go away...if they would alter the stance on some key items they would be successful again.  My only real question is then who would police it?  These schools can't police themselves, so now they are going to police each other...Can't see that part of it working out to well.  Outside of the police department, what does the ncaa actually do?

Notre Dame is an indy in football and cut their own tv deal...would this type of action be repeated by every 'big' school?  What would happen to the 'Mid-Majors'?

Way too much to happen...seems easier to fix the current?
