I never thought Ben Howland would sell out.

UCLA's coach is feeling the heat, following an 0-2 start after an embarrassing loss to Loyola Marymount and a 20-point drubbing at the hands of Middle Tennessee State to begin the season.

The Bruins are desperate and headed to play in a loaded Maui Invitational early next week.

So, what did Howland do?

Howland reinstated Reeves Nelson, his most productive player, on Wednesday afternoon.

"After much deliberation, I have decided to reinstate Reeves Nelson,” Howland in a statement. “Reeves understands that his reinstatement is contingent on his ability to continually meet the high standards we have established for all UCLA men’s basketball players. He expressed to me in our meeting earlier today that he desires to be a better person and better teammate going forward, and, given that, I feel as though I should give him that opportunity.”

Maybe this will serve as a wake-up call for Nelson, but multiple sources close to the UCLA program maintain Nelson is near the top of the list when it comes to "chemistry killers."

Again, Howland isn't the only coach in America to make a decision in which talent supersedes everything else.

He realizes that this team - one with the Wear Twins and a plump Josh Smith up front - and Lazeric Jones and Tyler Lamb in the backcourt - doesn't have enough talent to compete with the big boys. In fact, it may not be enough to finish in the top half of a mediocre Pac-12.

Howland wants to win. No, needs to win.

So, he's decided to bring back Nelson - whom he has clashed with throughout much of his career.

We know why.

Sometimes winning trumps everything else.

This was one of those cases.

UCLA's Howland reinstates Reeves Nelson

LOL........ drew can play a little D! And can lead the league in turnovers! The entire country has already watched the twins fail to catch a pass from him.

UCLA's Howland reinstates Reeves Nelson

Why is this such a big deal? UCLA is really just the North Carolina JV team! With JV players I am sure they will reinstate anyone. I expect the next headline to be UCLA inter mural Champions will get to finish the season in a Bruin uniform!

UCLA's Howland kisses Reeves Nelson's Ring

In a perfect world, Ben Howland would have told Reeves Nelson to take a flying "leap" through a rolling donut.  Obviously, it isn't a perfect world, and it is painfully obvious at UCLA.  I at least hope that Nelson had to run the arena steps or do a bunch of "gassers" before he was reinstated.
I really don't see how anyone on the team can take Ben Howland seriously anymore if Nelson didn't suffer some kind of penalty here.  If Howland loses the locker room, this could be one of "those" years where the teams UCLA has been beating regularly all get to "make their seasons" by exacting revenge.  As we saw the last three years at Michigan, where teams like Illinois and Purdue acted like they just won Super Bowls after beating them, there could be a lot of celebrations by UCLA opponents that will be reminiscent of Final Four celebrations.
The only good to come of this for Howland is that Nelson might face a backlash and be scapegoated if things take a bad turn.  At any rate, I don't see Nelson becoming a beloved alum or a GA anytime soon.

UCLA's Howland reinstates Reeves Nelson

Did Howland say that with a straight face?  I think someone edited coach Howland's comments.  The exact quote was: After a few minutes of panic and an 0 and 2 start, I had no need to diliberate.  Reeves understands that his reinstatement is contingent on his ability to score points, leap high, gather rebounds, win games.  Ben is a good coach and a big, fat liar.  But I like him.  If John Wooden was alive this statement by Howland would have killed him.

UCLA's Howland reinstates Reeves Nelson

It was bound to happen. And I do believe that Coach Howland will do the right thing if Nelson runs amok again. Nelson knows his future is in his own hands. If Coach Howland has to get his team to play together from here on out no matter who is on the floor. We may not have heard the last of Nelson and hopefully Bruin fans see nothing but positives.

The Chaminade game on Monday will tell the story... it's show up or get another embarassing loss.

Never fear program saver Larry Drew is on the way next year.  You want to talk about chemistry killers?  The little jiznit is the epitomy of chemistry killing.

So What Happened and Why was Nelson Reinstated?

Here's a theory

Ben Howland sits in his office after UCLA gets embarrased by losing at home to Middle Tennesee State. All of a sudden the phone rings and it is UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero.

Ben: Hello
Dan: Hello Ben. What happened? You told me you had everything under control?
Ben: Yeah, but we just didn't play up to our potential.
Dan: OK, here's the deal Ben. The Alumni association is on my butt. First they want Neuheisal to build a football powerhouse and now they want you to bring us back to NCAA baskertball prominence...and right now. This losing to Loyal Marymount, what are they some kind of Catholic girls school or something? Now you lose to a directional school that is located in Tennesee. This is not going to cut it with the UCLA Alumni association especially after we are working to get Pauly Pavallion rebuilt with their generous donations.
Ben: Dan, I understand everyone's concern. But I have it under control.
Dan: No Ben you don't. That's exactly what Neuhesial told me and then they got their butts kicked at Arizona State. No, I need real players on the court representing UCLA. I want you to reinstate that Nelson kid.
Ben: Nope, that kid is way too moody. He is happy one minute the next he is unhappy and wants to quit the team.
Dan: This is not your call, Ben. So tomorrow I want you to reinstate the Nelson kid.
Ben: OK Dan, but just for the record this is your call.
Dan: Fine...(Pause)...just make sure that he says he is sorry and that he will never do that moody stuff again. Got it?
Ben: OK Dan. But this kid is really moody and a few more losses and he will poison whatever team chemistry we have.
Dan: (Yelling over the Phone) Just Do It, Ben! Time is running out. We have the Maui Classic coming up. The big buck UCLA Alumni have their tickets to go over there to see them win not lose again. They will be all over my butt if it happens again.
Ben: OK Dan.
Dan: Thanks Ben.

Wow, you really taught him a lesson there Ben.  Now when people say "Man, you all got your ass kicked at home to MTSU", this idiot tool can honestly say "Hey, I wasn't even in the gym".....good one Ben.
