Khem Birch is leaving Pittsburgh after just 10 games.

The 6-foot-9 Canadian, the highest-ranked player to commit to the Panthers in the history of the program, told CBSSports.com he has decided to transfer.

"I'm leaving," Birch told CBSSports.com on Friday night. "I'm headed to Toronto now. I enjoyed my time at Pittsburgh, I love Coach (Jamie) Dixon, had no problems with the staff and the players. It just wasn't the right fit for me."

Birch informed CBSSports.com that he does not have a new list and has not decided on his next destination.

Birch, who attended Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) last season, was averaging 4.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocks through 10 games. It looked like Birch was on the verge of breaking out in late November, when he totaled 23 points, 21 rebounds and nine blocks in two wins over Pennsylvania and Robert Morris. He has started six games.

However, his minutes decreased the last couple of games. Birch averaged just 13.5 minutes over the last four games after playing 28.5 the previous two.

If there is a team that could sustain this type of loss, though, it's Pittsburgh. Jamie Dixon has Taylor and sophomore Talib Zanna in the post, and Robinson, a senior, at the power forward position. Without Birch, freshman Malcolm Gilbert will likely get increased minutes. Next year, touted New Zealand prospect Steven Adams will be welcomed into the fold.

Birch decided to reclassify to the class of 2011 last November. Scout.com ranked him No. 15 in ’11 after originally being a top five player in the class of 2012.

Pitt is not as good without Birch.  The whole story isn't exactly out there unless Birch really thinks the fit just isn't right for him.  That's got to be a cover-up for the real issue.  He should have seen ahead of him a little better and he would have found that he probably would have been getting more and more minutes this year and, then next year, he would be teaming with Stephen Adams.  The Panthers would have been something to watch next year if Birch stayed.

But who knows - rumor on campus says he's coming back.  I'll believe it when I see it.

He would be a great fit to replace Mbakwe of Minnesota Gophers, who is the best player in the Big Ten and would be a first team All American this year had be not been hurt.

Isn't coach Cal from PA? In fact, isn't he from Pittsburgh?

Better watch who you are insulting.

Topcatfan : You are one sick individual. UK does not need your type of support.

Kensport, what is my type of support? I have nothing against Pitt, or any other program.
My reply was to those who slander Cal & UK. It isnt funny to be slandered is it?

I have nothing but good wishes for Birch, Pitt, and Dixon. In all honesty, I wish them all good luck.
In the name of sanity, I only want UK & Cal to be accepted with all the rest.

There is not one charge that anyone might lay against Cal that is plausible, much yet proveable.
In any event, if you are able to do so, I will apologize with all my heart. I will be sincere.
However, if you, or anyone else cannot do so,
I would like for you to man-up, but I don't expect it. Understand that I do not expect it.
People are usually far less that what they claim to be.

Hey Lagersack. Maybe you should read about history. Graham is just like a Kentucky basketball player one and done. ASU is just a stepping stone for Todd to get a bigger paycheck. He will not make it through 2 years. He is a blow hole just like you. You will see.

I hope an insider comes forward with a real reason as to why Birch left Pitt.  I love Jamie Dixon and he is obviously a hell of a coach.  But the reason why he never gets to the Final Four is because Pitt never has that NBA lottery pick type player.  Maybe Dixon's team effort style of coaching needs to be slightly modified so that he coddles these superstar types a little more - like they're used to.  I don't like it, but that's where we're at in college hoops.  If you want these top prospects - who've been babied since their first dunk - maybe you have to ease them in a little more.
