Louisiana-Lafayette wins game with six on court

By Jeff Goodman

I wasn't a math major, but I sure can tell from the video below that Louisiana-Lafayette had six players on the court for the game-winning possession.

I was also taught that that's one more than is allowed.

Unfortunately, the officiating crew didn't catch it - and Western Kentucky was on the losing end of a game-winning shot because they had to guard six players for the final 21 seconds of overtime.

Hilltoppers coach Ken McDonald had no idea that Louisiana-Lafayette had six players on the court until after the final horn sounded.

The game was tied at 70-all as Lafayette inbounded the ball with 21 seconds remaining in overtime. The officiating crew had no idea that the Ragin' Cajuns had an extra player on the court.

The officials are supposed to count the number of players on each sides on the floor.

"It's a hard pill to swallow," said McDonald, who team nearly forced a turnover despite being a man down. "What really hurts is the kids. They really played hard."

"The refs made a mistake," he added.

McDonald said by the time everyone figured out what had transpired, the officiating crew was already off the court. He was told that he can't appeal.

"Once they leave the court, you can't review it," McDonald said. "From what I've been told, you can't appeal it, either."

McDonald was surprisingly calm for a coach whose young team (he starts four freshmen) could have used this victory.

"It's a tough way to lose," McDonald said. "But we can still take a lot of positives from this game."

Louisiana-Lafayette wins game with six on court

Louisiana Lafayete needs to comment on this and perhaps forfeit this game. If the lame duck referee's would have caught this, there would have been a technical. This means 2 freethrows and possession of the ball. More than likely this means that LL would have lost the game. These ref's need to be fired, NOW! Of course, if LL does nothing, they will be looked at the rest of the year with a fine tooth comb. This was a freebie, savor the flavor because you can bet this will not happen again, or heads will roll for sure.

The coach's job is to coach his players.  It should come as no surprise that a scorekeeper would point the finger at the coach.

Why did the coach lose his job?

You've got to be kidding me. WKU was playing MAN-TO-MAN and they didn't say anything? Forget the coach, who was on the other end of the court, what about the PLAYERS? I played basketball, and I would have been SCREAMING if I were playing for WKU. So very hard to believe. The only people I can see in this particular video who are screaming are some fans on the near side (bottom right of the screen).

By letting this win stand, when they have proof that it was in violation of the rules, the NCAA is just encouraging rule breaking.  If no penalty comes out of this how can they (NCAA) punish any team who violates the rules.

This is the sort of thing Duke would get away with, during an elite 8  NCAA tournament game.

This was a Division I game? Isn't there an official scorer in charge of which players are in the game? Aren't there statasticians who keep track of players' minutes? Why didn't the officials desk horn sound to alert the officials to the extra player in the game? Too many people are actually being paid too insure that this does not happen for it to happen in a Division I Men's College Basketball Game. If I am WKU, no one on that official's desk ever works one of my home games ever again.

Boy, it's REALLY hard to imagine an entire coaching staff, and all the players on the court AND on the bench missing this for 17 seconds right at the crucial end of the game.  Wasn't ANYONE paying attention?  No wonder he was fired.

How inept must the officials be for not catching this?  Or the score keeper for that matter?  I officiate in middle school and even the score keepers in middle school ball catch 6 men on the floor.  It is not the coaches job to know how many players the opposing team has on the floor.  He is concentrating on the end of the game and offense or defense.  By the time he picks up on it many times, it would be too late.  I imagine being a score keeper, you probably have never been in a coaches position especially at that level.  I have been at the college level in coaching and can tell you, it is not something as a coach of the opposing team to be keying in on.  The game win should go to the losing team.
