Western Kentucky has scheduled a Friday afternoon press conference to announce that Ken McDonald will no longer serve as the school's men's basketball coach. The development comes less than 24 hours after the Hilltoppers lost a home game in overtime when officials didn't realize Louisiana-Lafayette scored the game-winning basket with six players on the court.

“I have recommended to President Gary Ransdell that Ken McDonald no longer serve as our head men’s basketball coach, and he has agreed and supports my decision," said WKU athletic director Ross Bjork. "President Ransdell and I met with Coach McDonald this morning to inform him of the decision, and then we met with and informed the entire men’s basketball staff. I also met with our student-athletes and discussed the reasons for our conclusion and told them that we are committed to all of them as students and athletes here at WKU, and we owe them the ‘great program’ they signed up for."

McDonald was in his fourth season at the school. The former Texas assistant led WKU to a 25-9 record in his first season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He went 21-13 in 2009-10 and 16-16 last season. The Hilltoppers were 5-11 this season with a freshman-heavy roster.

Assistant Ray Harper will coach the rest of the season on an interim basis.

Western Kentucky plays Troy on Saturday.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

Okay, WKU uses this as an opportunity to fire their coach and promote Ray Harper to interim coach.  Let's see...when Ray was at Kentucky Wesleyan, he did win a couple of NCAA D2 championships.  Almost more importantly, he almost got KWC kicked out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference when he was found to have used ineligible players.  KWC was on probation and not allowed to compete in the postseason in 2005.  They had to forfeit the entire 2003 season.  As I remember there were whisperings about this for several years before they got tagged.

Hopefully, no further problems will occur on his watch, and WKU will keep this in mind if he is considered to become the permanent head coach.

Also, he didnt get fired for the ONE loss yesterday.  He got fired because he has brought down the program.  He cant control his team, he gets in trouble off campus (caught cheating etc.), doesnt really understand much about the x's and o's at the end of a game and his players dont like him.

You should do some research before posting something so STUPID.  WKU has the 16th most wins in NCAA history.  More than teams such as Louisville, georgetown, and UCONN.  Streets and Smiths Basketball has them as the 31st best NCAA program of all time. (This was this year).  They have won 18 games in 21 apperances in the NCAA tourny.  They are 9th in all time winning %, 4th all-time in wins per season, 7th all-time in 20 win seasons, and 3rd all time in conference championship.  So hillbilly school, learn your basketball before ya talk.

The guy obviouslt has some issues.  What's he have the wild notion that WKU has the ablility to be a powerhouse?  Well, maybe, in a fifth dimension...; but not with him there...

What a f_ed up AD Ross Bjork must be. That jerk off is the guy who needs to be fired for not supporting his coach. What a black eye for a hillbilly school and a conference which tries to act big time.

Delusions of Grandeur

It's one thing if a basketball factory like UK fires someone for having a bad year.  But this is a school that historically hasn't been all that great, and their roster is just too young.  Firing the coach is stupid.  They are giving up all hope of doing well this year, and they are also guaranteeing that the kids will have to start learning another system all over again next season.

I hope half of the team transfers and the idiots at the top have to put up with a lot of second-guessing.
