Western Kentucky has scheduled a Friday afternoon press conference to announce that Ken McDonald will no longer serve as the school's men's basketball coach. The development comes less than 24 hours after the Hilltoppers lost a home game in overtime when officials didn't realize Louisiana-Lafayette scored the game-winning basket with six players on the court.

“I have recommended to President Gary Ransdell that Ken McDonald no longer serve as our head men’s basketball coach, and he has agreed and supports my decision," said WKU athletic director Ross Bjork. "President Ransdell and I met with Coach McDonald this morning to inform him of the decision, and then we met with and informed the entire men’s basketball staff. I also met with our student-athletes and discussed the reasons for our conclusion and told them that we are committed to all of them as students and athletes here at WKU, and we owe them the ‘great program’ they signed up for."

McDonald was in his fourth season at the school. The former Texas assistant led WKU to a 25-9 record in his first season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He went 21-13 in 2009-10 and 16-16 last season. The Hilltoppers were 5-11 this season with a freshman-heavy roster.

Assistant Ray Harper will coach the rest of the season on an interim basis.

Western Kentucky plays Troy on Saturday.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

I can't even begin to say how bad the officiating is in college basketball anymore.  It really is starting to ruin the game.  Keep having Final Fours where no team breaks 60 and the TV viewers are going to start staying away in droves.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

Seems pretty obvious that last night's goof was just the straw that broke the camel's back.  The program has been going steadily downhill for 3+ years, it seems, plus there were the personal issues as well.  Just too much bad stuff.  Last night's game just determined the date of the firing, that's all.

Controversial Loss,Final Dagger in WKU's McDonald

Yeah they fired McDonald after a controversial loss, however; the story behind the firing is his poor leadership of the team over the last two years. Find a better headline....no wait, I'll write on for you.

Overall, it will be their costly mistake, especially since it will be 13 years until they get back to the NCAA tourney.  Some people are seriously borderline retarded, with no medical merit, like the unfortunate people who are stricken with tthis disease.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

This particular game was not the reason he was fired. The title of this article is misleading. It's true that he was fired after this controversial loss... but it's not this loss that caused his termination. He's led the team w/ a poor record, and he made some pretty bad personal decisions that became known to the community. He tried, I think. But he wasn't succesful in improving the program.

WKU fires Ken McDonald after controversial loss

Aside from his first season where he had a group of players that was pretty much the same as the one that had made the Sweet Sixteen the year prior, all of McDonald's teams lacked chemistry. He never got them to play as a team. That is why he is being fired. I'm not sure why anyone thinks this firing is related to UL-L having six players on the court for that loss; it's just pure coincidence that it happened after that. He may have been bringing in good recruiting classes, but he couldn't keep any of them. It doesn't really count when they transfer out after a year or two, and to me that is an indicator of some fairly large problems off the court.

a program that has probably been the Big Dance a total of five times in their history
Yeah, five.. twenty.. what's the difference? Not to mention all the NIT appearances when that was the big tournament. WKU only has the 16th most victories of all NCAA D-I programs and the 8th best winning percentage in NCAA history, it's not like they're a program with tradition or anything.

God. Is there anything worse than UK fans?

They are firing this guy because why exactly?  The refs made a mistake and he didn't catch it so he gets fired?  Seriously?
