Kansas to be taken seriously after Baylor win

By Jeff Goodman

LAWRENCE, Kansas -- There were those prepared to anoint Baylor as a national championship contender if Scott Drew's Bears could remain undefeated with a victory at Phog Allen.

This was the ultimate test for a team that had beaten Kansas State in Manhattan and waltzed into Lawrence with a 18-0 mark. Instead, it was Bill Self's Kansas squad, one that was basically written off as a Final Four contender after a loss to Davidson down the road in Kansas City, that showed it may have a shot to do something come March.

Self has, at the moment, the nation's top player in Thomas Robinson. Unlike earlier in the season when he forced the issue and attempted to do too much in a loss to Kentucky, the 6-foot-9 sophomore was spectacular against a Baylor frontline that is as deep and talented as any that doesn't reside in Lexington, Ky.

But the difference on Monday night was the play of senior point guard Tyshawn Taylor.

Taylor has been an enigma throughout his entire career, but he was fearless in Monday night's 92-74 victory, knocking down clutch 3-pointers and also attacking the Bears big men with determination.

Robinson finished with 27. Taylor did him one better, scoring 28 points, while three other Jayhawks -- Jeff Withey, Travis Releford and Elijah Johnson -- all finished in double-figures.

There's no shame in losing at Phog Allen. It's a brutal place to play, right there with Cameron and Rupp. It happens to just about everyone -- and fourth-ranked Baylor became the latest victim.

However, the concern with the Bears is toughness - or lack thereof. And Drew's team didn't show itself all that well in that regard. Kansas imposed its will on Baylor, dominating the Bears on the glass and scoring virtually at will on a porous defense. Perry Jones III, along with most of his teammates, pulled a disappearing act after the first 15 minutes of the game.

Baylor has fallen and now just two unbeaten teams remain: Syracuse and Murray State.

Kansas to be taken seriously after Baylor win

I will not completely reiterate my previous post that Drew is a poor coach, as it was seen how poorly prepared defensively Baylor is to all that saw this game. Even their man defense was terrible tonite, and the zone was worse. If Drew can't teach the guys how to come off screens or switch & rotate, I can see his stock diminishing rather quickly, also the quality of recruits who really want to play at the next level. IMO D. Manning is about the best big man coach in America. Offensively Bayl

or could be dominant as hell inside, but showed little desire to play an inside game at all. With a ball handler like Jackson they should be in the paint the entire game, it all starts at the point. Speaking of, wow, did Taylor raise the bar or what? His stock is on the way up for sure. These guys are getting battle hardened with the schedule they've played this year & they have played tremendous defense for about the past month, something they did only in spurts beforehand. They're playing unselfish ball, no pun intended, now & yes, the road to the BG12 Title goes down that chalky, limestone path through Lawrence, Kansas. Teams have discovered that when you double the monster, someone else will make them pay. Withey has improved leaps & bounds, and tell me another team in D1 that lost 4 starters & are back in the top ten again this year? There may be another, but I don't know who it is. Not too many teams win in Allen, it's just that way. The last time they lost was the day that TRob's Mother passed on and the entire team & staff was up all night before the Texas game. That streak was at 69 games. Hey, these guys are for real, and I sure wouldn't want to see them in the first 2 rounds. However, some teams & "coaches" are just too dumb to be wary enough to prepare. Ring a bell anyone? How do we spell...Drew? It makes me ill to see someone squander so much talent, just ill. Most have taken Kansas seriously for quite a while - we are always a team that is competing for a title. It's only hacks like you who ever don't take us seriously and consistantly rewarding other teams that played soft schedules.

Though there've been some losses along the way, Kansas challenged themselves in the non-conference, and they came ready to play tonight. This is what happens when you play soft non-conference schedules - you lose, and lose badly. See Missouri. See Baylor.

Tonight, Kansas reminded everyone that we're still the best in the Big 12. Rock Chalk!

yah, Goodman for gawd's sake man learn to proof your work. In addition to the glaring errors mentioned below you also had this one.

Not surprised at all about the result of this one. Kansas is a good team, playing at home in one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. Factor in that Baylor is like Indiana, a good but not great team on the rise but not quite there yet, and you have a loss like this. What encourages me is that as an Ohio State fan, the Buckeyes took KU to overtime while missing arguably the best player in the country in Jared Sullinger. Even the best teams lose sometimes in college basketball. It just happens sometimes. KU lost to Davidson. Anyone really think that Davidson would even beat them more than 2 out of 10 times? Like wise, Ohio State's losses were in OT at KU, and last second losses at IU and at IL, in which Brandon Paul had a never to be repeated performance just to win by 5. Now that Baylor has lost, my opinion about Syracuse still rings true. They are only #1 because they haven't played anyone on the road yet. Their schedule has been ridiculously easy, and it appears it may stay that way all the way into late February. The media will keep tooting their horn telling us how deep they are, blah, blah, blah. I've seen them enough to say that they wouldn't beat Kentucky, Ohio State, or probably North Carolina (even though they lost more than a game when FSU blew them up). They are on par with Duke, I think. If they get a #1 seed, they will be the least tested #1 seed in recent memory.

Kansas to be taken seriously after Baylor win

I cannot believe KU has not been taken seriously....what?  This team lost the majority of its starters from a year ago but when you have coach Self leading the team, this is not his first rodeo. ROCK CHALK!!

while missing arguably the best player in the country in Jared Sullinger.

I will argue that and so would about every sports writer and sports analyst out there. Thomas Robinson is the front runner for the POY, maybe next year Sully can do it, if he can stay healthy.
