Memphis' Thomas likely done for season

Memphis coach Josh Pastner told CBSSports.com on Monday that Adonis Thomas will have surgery this week to repair what Pastner described as a "tendon between the foot and the ankle."

"It's a minor surgery, but it's just smart to get it done now," Pastner said. "The recovery time is two-to-three months."

That means Thomas could possibly, in theory, return for the NCAA tournament.

But, Pastner acknowledged, the freshman is likely done for the season.

Thomas was a McDonald's All-American averaging 10 points and four rebounds per game. Pastner said the 6-foot-6 wing suffered the injury last Friday in a "one-on-one containment" drill when he jumped and "came down awkwardly."

"It was just a freak thing -- he didn't land on anybody's foot or anything -- and now we're down two starters," Pastner said while noting that Charles Carmouche, who started the first four games of the season, is also sidelined with an injury. "Guys will just have to step up and get the job done. We'll just have to move forward."

Memphis is 12-5 overall, 3-0 in Conference USA.

The Tigers play at UCF on Wednesday.

This sucks, Adonis was getting into a groove. I guess the silver lining is I doubt he enters the NBA draft this year.

The Tigers stepped it up in Houston. They looked like they had a purpose.

Thomas will be missed to be sure, but this might be the jolt this team needs to play harder.

There will be bench players that will have to make the most of this opportunity to get playing time. Esp. Wesley Witherspoon. This is his last year to show what he can do. And Thomas will be back next year to make his claim to greatness.

Good luck with your surgery Adonis!

As unfortunate as this is, it simplifies Pastner's job of keeping everybody happy. Less drama in the the sense of managing playing time for so many players.

Now that the rotation is smaller, some players who haven't gotten much playing time will get their chance.

If you want to draw a positive, it is that everyone gets a little more playing time, and that can have some very positive effects. We saw it in Houston. It will be interesting to see what carries over at Central Florida.

Go Tigers!

Just when the guards were dumping the ball down low to the "big guys", which was opening up the lanes for the guards.
Adonis was just coming into his own with confidence and board work.
Time for some of the bench players to chip in and pick up the slack. Good thing they got Hall on a transfer from Seton
Hall.  Black, Hall and Spoon have to raise their games and maybe Simpson can become tougher on the boards. Will had
his off game vs. So. Miss and I expect him to take off now. Josh must continue his tough love and get these H.S stars
to play together. Go Tigers.

So sorry to hear this.  He was just beginnng to make a difference, but will be great.  Although we will miss him, his recovery is the most important thing.  WW will probably get a chance to play the three.  He will need to really step up.  He has been playing great in the last few games.  I wish Adonis the best and a good recovery.  Looking forward to the match up with UCF.  Cusa's top two point leaders will be interesting.  Here's hoping Will comes out on top.

Thomas's season may be done but the tigers season isn't.

Pastner is a great coach. Everyone forgets how young he is, yet already one of the top 20 coaches in the country. I'd put him ahead of Brad Stevens and Buzz Peterson. He's one of the top 5 recruiting Head Coaches in the land.  Hard to belive he wasn't even drinking age when Calipari took over at Memphis and Memphis made the best young hire in Div I this decade when they got him.

Tough news, Tiger fans.

Just keep repeating the mantra, what don't kill you makes you stronger.

Sorry, I can't do better than that right now.
