Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

By Jeff Goodman

Maybe I'm nuts to think a college group could hang with an NBA team, but I'm not so sure.

Check out the Toronto Raptors starting unit last night against the Boston Celtics -- and tell me you wouldn't take John Calipari's first five over the Raptors.

Not just for the future, but maybe even right now.

The Raptors backcourt was Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and athletic freak DeMar DeRozan. The frontcourt: James Johnson, Ed Davis and Aaron Gray.

Pitiful.

I understand Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are just freshmen, but it's not like Davis and DeRozan are grown men, either. Both are just 22 years old. Johnson is 24 and Gray is 26.

I'd take Davis over Gray in a heartbeat. Yes, today. I'd also go with Gilchrist over Davis -- today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Calderon blows away Marquis Teague at this juncture and we'll give a slight nod to Johnson over Terrence "Mr. Enigma" Jones, but not if Jones' head is actually into the game.

Then there's the matter of DeRozan vs. Doron Lamb. DeRozan is a terrific athlete and virtually a non-shooter. Lamb is a big-time shooter. Completely different players, but I'll go with DeRozan.

So maybe Calipari's current edition down in Lexington wouldn't come out on top against the Raptors, but they'd certainly give them a run for their money.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

wow really? considering the raptors are missing their best player there are still 5 other teams with a worse record.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

There's no question that Kentucky has more talent in its first seven than Toronto. Davis, Kidd-Gilchrest and Jones across the front in a few years would be better than most if not all NBA teams could put up against you. Teague will eventually be a fine point and Lamb is a nice shooting guard who can bomb from long range while having a superior game from 15 feet and in. Miller and Wiljer are very talented and may both make more than a few bucks in the NBA.

If I was buying a team to come into the NBA I would definitely rather invest in these seven players than Toronto's best seven. Were they to play today head to head Toronto would probably win, particularly with NBA rules. NCAA rules it could be close. That anyone would seriously consider whether a college team could whip an NBA franchise is a compliment to Kentucky.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

I think it's pretty easy to call depending on the answer to one very important question. Who's rules do you use. If this is on an NBA court with NBA rules, UK wouldn't stand a chance. Could that team adjust to a wider lane, bigger 3 point line, and longer shot clock. Maybe, but not unless they spent all of their time working on it for months. Not to mention little changes like defensive 3 second calls. The court dimentions aren't even about the ability to shoot a longer shot, but be familiar with having to defend 3 feet farther out to play the same style of D.

If you play college rules, maybe Kentucky would have a decent shot, but I still think the Raptors would win. The big issue is depth. Kentucky only really goes 7 deep, and I don't think they could go a whole game against an NBA team with that little depth.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

why the Raptors? they are clearly do not have the worst roster in the NBA, the Bobcats last night started a line up of Kemba Walker, Gerlad Henderson, Desagnia Diop, Boris Diaw and Tyrus Thomas. keep taking shots at the raptors because its the only canadian team, its a good look for you and CBS.com
we dont play well against Kemba Sealed

give us the raptors.

Kentucky vs. NBA's Raptors: Not an easy call

If collegiate teams were able to practice as much as NBA teams, I think with a bit more physical maturity Kentucky would be able to give the Raptor's starters a run for their money.

Lamb wouldn't start this game Miller would because of size and versatility around the rim. Much more difficult match-up for the Raptors. It would be close for a half maybe but UK has no bench, you can't go 7 deep in the NBA!

You know how to get BBN to your site Jeff. As a member of BBN in good standing, I think your nuts if you think UK could hang with the Raptors!
