Anthony Grant suspends 3 more Alabama starters

Something pretty terrible must be happening inside the Alabama program. Days after starter Tony Mitchell was indefinitely suspended from the team, head coach Anthony Grant has now suspended JaMychal Green, Andrew Steele and Trevor Releford, the school announced Saturday afternoon. All three are starters.

What's more, the players were sent home from the team's road trip in Louisiana. Alabama plays against LSU at 7 p.m. ET Saturday night.

The news of the players suspended was first broken by Cecil Hurt of Tuscaloosa News, then confirmed soon thereafter by a school press release.

“We are extremely disappointed in the choices and decisions made by these young men that has led to this suspension,” Grant said in a release. “Talent is a gift, but character is a choice. The consequences of their choices have negatively impacted them as individuals and the people that love and support them. Our hope is that they will be mature enough to accept responsibility for their actions and place a higher value on their character.”

Grant's actions are perhaps unprecedented. Alabama is a 16-7 (5-4 SEC) team that's not assured of an NCAA tournament berth. It now goes without its four best players. Can you remember a college basketball coach in contention for the NCAAs that had to suspended this many starters? If it's something this drastic, the players involved had to know what was coming. Mitchell was the first signal, and now five days later it's this.

The Tide is a mess, and unless Grant's message is received and obeyed, Alabama could be chancing missing the NCAA tournament despite clearly having talent worthy of playing games that matter in March.

some things are not for the public to know. these players are KIDS.

one major bball school kicked their star off the team for having sex with another player's girlfriend (and getting her pregnant).
the chemistry of the team was ruined and the season tanked.

a team is like the military. you are only as strong as your weakest link. get rid of the rotten apple before the whole team sinks from the in-house cancer.

If we could get more coaches like Grant and get rid of more coaches like Saban, athletes would be much better off.

I hope these kids learn and grow from this. Its better than prison and/or a life lived stupidly.

Michigan State dumped a couple stars last year, and look at them NOW.

good luck guys. and coach? I respect the hell out of what you did for those young men. You back is covered.

I am proud of Coach Grant and our program.  The press release makes one thing clear, he is building both men and a championship caliber basketball program.

I hoped he would be great when we hired him, he is better than I hoped he'd be.

Crimson77 - You obviously have no idea what your coach is all about. If you think a W-L record is the only thing a coach should be measured then you need to find some pro teams to root for. Grant is about winning but also believes integrity is important. He has a history of suspending his players when they step out of line. He suspended JaMychal Green in 2010. Grant won’t sell his or his program's character for an NCAA tournament berth. The NCAA tournament selection committee will give a few body blows to 'Bama for losing games without suspended players. But the Tide administration shouldn't.

Anthony Grant is not on the hotseat and won't be. He will end up leaving us before we get rid of him. Coach Grant is a winner and he won't be pushed or threatened or strongarmed into building this program any other way but his own. Kudos to him.

I am embarrased by some of the comments by Bama fans on this thread.

Here's hoping this suspension is the real deal, and not some silly game or two wink and nod, that many of us band wagon fans have grown accustomed to being gift wrapped for our low brow win-at-all-costs, entertain-me-now attitudes.

For an indefinite suspension of four starters there should some explanation of what actually happened. The standard they broke team rules just isn't good enough. Without these players there is no way for Bama to make the tourney so I'd like to know why this season was tossed away.

All I said is I would like more information before I decide to throw players under the bus. I guess that's just too much to ask

It will all come out in due time my friend. Unless your job revolves around Alabama men's basketball, you are owed nothing. More than likely 2 players will be reinstated.

I have no idea what's actually happening at this program at this time (none of us do) but at first glance it would seem Mr. Grant is taking the high-road, and then some, regarding accountability and adult actions in college athletics.

Sadly, or maybe its a good thing, he's doing it in a conference that would seem to care the least about this sort of example.

I have no idea how this will play out but I wish him the best.
