With the draft just around the corner...

Posted on: April 8, 2008 11:43 am

Hello my good fans of the Mighty Cheez... how is life?

With what is hopefully the last snow of the year (however doubtful that might be), I sit down to discuss the newest newsy news in Packerland.

The draft is right around the corner and the Packers Big Guys aren't enlightening us a whole lot on who they're looking at. Everyone has their own mock drafts out and about but no one really cares about the Packers. We have a crappy pick, thanks to our 13-3 season, so most of the big gunners will be gone from the board. I don't know about you, but I don't know if I totally trust Ted Thompson when it comes to drafting. AJ Hawk was an outstanding pick, and Aaron Rodgers--well we'll see how he pans out. LAST year's pick totally baffled me. There were far more talented players on the board than Justin Harrell, someone who didn't see grass his senior year at Tennessee. At the very least we could have drafted someone and then traded. Well let's see what the old dude has up his leave this year. God knows it can't be worse than last. On a happier note, the Packers will be holding their annual Lambeau Field Draft Party for those of you fortunate to actually live in Wisconsin. While the coaches and VIPs are burrowed away determining the future of the Cheez, players will be there to mingle and greet fans as well as sign autographs.

Once that is out of the way and summer has faded, the pre season will once again arrive, reminding us that no matter who retired, the football world does go on. The Packers pre season schedule has been announced--their two home games will be against Cincinnatti and Tennessee and their two road games will be @ San Francisco and @ Denver.

Shedding yet another tear for Brett Favre, I must find a Kleenez.

Until next time,

With the draft just around the corner...

Thanks for the comments, my fellow Packers faithful.

In regards to WPF's comment about drafting Vernon Davis, he said after the draft that he was praying the Packers wouldn't draft him because he didnt want to play there and he would hold out.  Lost all respect in my book that day. Green Bay is the most sacred place in the world to play football and if he was referring to winning, let's examine the Packers record and the 49ers record from last year... Yeah, Vernon, that's what I thought. PACKERS on top!

Peace, peeps.

With the draft just around the corner...

I think this will be the draft that defines how well Ted Thompson has done during his years leading our team.  I think he's done okay so far; I wouldn't have minded Vernon Davis, but I am very pleased with A.J. Hawk.  I really wanted Mario Williams, however.

I also enjoyed the Aaron Rodgers selection.  I think we got a poor man's Carson Palmer, but at a much cheaper cost.  He seems intelligent, but could be the guy that needs more talent around him to succeed, unlike a QB that may be very familiar to us.

Justin Harrell... this was hard for me.  I was CONVINCED that Greg Olsen would be the one.  The line was solid, and Favre can never have enough weapons.  But I can see what Thompson was trying to do.  Change Favre with defense in the sentence prior to the last, and I believe that may be Ted Thompson's philosophy.  I also thought Sidney Rice would have been a reach, but one that I think may have paid off last season as opposed to the next...

Thanks, Cheez.  The Packers may be my footballing temple, but for some reason I can only blog about everything but.  Too close to the heart.  Yet, now I have the weekly Packer paper.  Much appreciated.

With the draft just around the corner...

We might not have a high first round pick (#30) but we do have bargaining power in that we have 3 picks in the top 60.  I think our need are as follows

  1. Corners (Depth and age are of huge concern)
  2. Tight End (Lee had a good year but Franks is all but done and we need a reliable 2nd option)
  3. Backup QB (Rodgers is fragile and we need a reliable backup Brohm would be ideal)

i think drafting harrell could turn out very nicely actually....over the last six games of the year he actually outplayed corey williams if you look at the stats....he allowed us to trade corey williams for a second round pick in this years by drafting harrell tt got a better player and a second round pick...seems like a good pick to me
