The alternative school I was a part of is a school for students who, for a variety of reasons, are failing at the regular school. Reasons can include poor behavior, attendance, low grades, etc. Almost every student we took in was a gang member, came from a broken home, and were poor. These are students who, statistically, are "at risk" of dropping out, among other things.
Our school day was shorter, we used blended instruction that combined traditional classroom teaching with computer based teaching, class sizes were smaller, and a daycare was available for girls who did not practice abstinence.
Students had to apply to join our school, a counselor would look over their application to see if the students qualified as being "at risk," and students could be sent back to their home school for variety of reasons. Most of the time it was due to either poor attendance or violent behavior.
The point is that I was able to take students who, statistically, are at risk of dropping out and becoming criminals and turned them into students capable of passing their American history test.
So you believe that having students "not fail" is a criteria for a "fantastic teacher".
With these students yes....they were always so excited when they found out they passed.
But, rev, your attitude about the "unteachables" shows that you should not teach in the inner city.
This assumes that my personal "attitude" is somehow relevant to teaching these students....my test scores show that what I was doing in class worked. The fact that you would run off a good teacher who is succeeding where others failed just because you don't like my "attitude" makes you an idiot. I had to go the extra mile just to get the students to trust me and do things that other teachers would not be willing to do.

In general, no....but I was able to do some things to initially earn the trust of the students that I won't talk about. I'm saying that what it takes to reach these kids is not something that the vast majority of the population is willing to do.
I'm saying that doing what it takes can literally ruin your personal life.

No, I'm not stating your case....your assumption is that the reason I was successful was because of how we taught in class, but that was only a minor part of it. I succeeded when my colleagues failed because of the trust I was able to gain with the students outside of the classroom. This wasn't just making home visits, but I won't talk about it further than that.

Silver uses statistics to come up with percentages and, as far as I know, he still sees some internal polling. Interesting that you think internal polling is better than professional polling. I am not sure that I trust any polling today. There have been too many quick swings for me to trust these polls. But Silver just uses the polls to come up with his numbers. If the polls are wrong, he will be wrong but that also means that we have no accurate way to predict.

Two more reasons for DC residents to be depressed. The Redskins drop another game against a bad team, and now Romney winning the election 2 days later! Even compared to the rest of Maryland, DC goes more hardcore for the Democrat party. And with such a huge black population, hit hard by unemployment, they care more about Obama Phones and Obama Bucks. Turnout will probably 15% of normal as they drown their sorrows in malt liquor. I think there is a huge difference. Time and time and time again, Romney has stated he'll let congress decide. In principle, I agree. But in reality, this is just Romney passing the buck (CEO style). You have to offer the American public some type of agenda even if it lacks "details". What Mitt continues to ride with is saying little, offering nothing, and then leaving him an "out" to blame Congress.
Do we really want to leave it to congress to deal with the budget crisis deadline at the end of this year? This is a congress I'm sure, that couldn't even agree on the type of toilet paper that should be placed in the rest rooms of congress. Obama has already laid down some ideas/guidlines on this issue. One may hate or like them, but at least we know what they are. Yet good old Willard is going to take the weinie way out and let "congress" decide.
So, yes Revan there are differences, if you choose not to see them hey that's you decision.
