Bede, The Venerable (673-735)

English scholar who wrote a history of the early centuries of Anglo-Saxon England and an encyclopedia which consisted largely of excerpts from Pliny the Elder. He noted that the equinox had slipped three days earlier than the traditional March 21, but the calendar remained the same until the institution of the Gregorian calendar in 1582 by Christoph Clavius. Bede was the first to date events from the birth of Christ.

Day 735. The venerable around here have already noted the calendar for unlimiting favorites slipping, it seems, since the birth of Christ (at least, from the overheard swearing of the admins). Perhaps some Gregorian chant would help. (vene creatur sprititus...)

Any... Day... (A.D.) Now....

Cockpit error sent 737 into Pacific nose dive

TOKYO - A Japanese airline says one of its jets nose-dived and rolled almost upside down earlier this month because the co-pilot hit the wrong controls while trying to open the cockpit door so the captain could return from a restroom break.

Two flight attendants were slightly hurt and four passengers got airsick when the All Nippon Airways Boeing 737-700 with 117 people aboard descended sharply, veered off course and went belly up over the Pacific on its way from southern Japan to Tokyo.

ANA said Thursday that the co-pilot is believed to have mistakenly hit the rudder controls instead of the door lock to allow the pilot back in the cockpit.

Day 737. 6 days into year 3. Pushing the wrong buttons, like limits on favorites, is dangerous and a result of not giving much thought to what you are doing. A small but crucial act and bang - Going belly up. Any.. Day.. Now..

Charlize Theron:No Sex for 737 Days

  By: Stacy Lee | January 5, 2012

This story may be hard to believe but according to sexy actress Charlize Theron‘s close friend she’s been sexless for more than 2 years. According to this friend Charlize is very picky and doesn’t believe in one night stands.

I have a few questions, 1st does anyone believe this story? 2nd do you believe in one night stands? If so what actress or actor would you like to have a sexy one night stand with? Just curious
.
.
.

I have found the yin to CBS's yang. Charlize Theron hasn't had sex in 737 days, while we are constantly getting screwed by the Admins.

Two years?!?!?! Wow, that's a long time. I'd say the story, at least generally, is true. Kind of difficult to believe that kind of story would get out unless there was some truth to it. Let's say it's "only" 14 months and there's some exaggeration at play. That's still a long, long time.

That girl must go through the batteries! lol

Can't say I believe in one night stands. First of all, the fear of STDs, not to mention the lack of connection. Plus, I don't drink as much as I used to and alcohol almost always plays a role in those kind of decisions, but let's be honest. If the opportunity with some miracle guy presented itself, I'm sure I could be persuaded to bend my principals some. ha ha

Maybe she can give up abstinence for Lent. Cool

738 Pound Bluefin Tuna Caught; World Record?

   By Sami K. Martin , March 7, 2012

Nathan Adams has a big fish tale to tell friends! The angler recently caught a 738-pound Pacific bluefin tuna off the coast of New Zealand, which may be a new record.

According to reports, Adams was fishing as part of a competition off Houhora, New Zealand. The competition was sponsored by the International Game Fish Association, which is still searching to see if Adams' catch is, in fact, a world record. If approved, it will claim the title of largest catch and bump off the current leader, a 716-pound Pacific tuna.

Day 738. How does it get into those little cans? This guy wasn't limited to a little sushi. A week into year 3... and so little news.

How does a person even have the time to get plastic surgery 739 times in their life? 739 times! At least now we know exactly how far to take a plastic surgery obsession before looking like Joan does without any makeup on.

Joan Rivers was 'kidding' about 739 plastic surgeries

New York, Feb 8 : Comedian Joan Rivers, who recently caused a bit of a furore when she said she'd had over 700 cosmetic procedures, has insisted that she was just joking. After the 78-year-old comedian and E! Fashion Police host joked on a talk show about her trips to the plastic surgeon, she assured the host that she was only pulling his leg.

Day 739. Check your leg. Maybe the admins have been just kidding about the wait for the removal of limits. Or maybe they were just kidding about the limit? ..Or maybe they were just kidding about telling us anything at all. Ya, that.

CD V-742 Pocket Dosimeters (ca. 1958-2000)

The CD V-742 was a direct-reading (self-reading) pocket dosimeter that measured exposures from 0 – 200 roentgen (R). The 1959 revision of Technical Bulletin TB-11-20 Radiological Instruments for Civil Defense identified the CD-V-742 as one of three civil defense dosimeters, the other two being the CD V-138 and the CD V-730. According to the Bulletin, the CD V-742 superseded the CD V-740. Four years later, the Handbook for Radiological Monitors (April 1963) stated that the CD V-742 had replaced both the CD V-730 and the CD V-740. It is somewhat odd that a document published in 1959 would imply that the CD V-742 superceded anything given the fact that the first CD V-742s were procured in FY 1961, at least according to the FY 1961 annual report.

Quoting CPG 1-30: "The dosimeter provided for general operational use is the CDV-742 which has a measurement Range of to 200 roentgens. Until these were available in sufficient quantity, the CDV-730 with a range of 0 to 20 roentgens and the CDV-740 with a range of 0 to 100 roentgens had been furnished. They are still usable. Dosimeters resemble a fountain pen in size and shape. The CDV-742 can be identified by its bronze or gold colored pocket clip. The CDV-742 high range dosimeter is the standard for use in shelter, WER [Weapons Effects Reporting] Stations, emergency service organizations and vital facilities. They would also be used by the millions of civil preparedness workers that would be needed for recovery operations during the postattack period when emergence from shelter is possible."

Manufacturers: Bendix, Landsverk, Victoreen

Number manufactured: approximately 3,120,000

A production run example of the CD V-742 manufactured by the Landsverk Electrometer Corporation (LEC). Size: 4.25" long, 0.5" diameter. Donated by the Northern Ohio Chapter of the Health Physics Society courtesy of John Wills.
A production run example of the CD V-742 manufactured by Bendix. Size: 4.25" long, 0.5" diameter.
A production run example of the CD V-742 manufactured by Bendix. Size: 4.25" long, 0.5" diameter. A problem with the civil defense yellow paint was that it would often chip and flake. To avoid this, Bendix made some anodized aluminum barrel dosimeters (the E and F series). The anodized gold color was the closest they could come to the standard yellow.
A rare example of the black plastic CD V-742 manufactured by Bendix in the early 1960s. It was the first dosimeter made for civil defense purposes that employed a plastic barrel. Size: 4 3/8" long, 7/16" diameter.
Bendix wanted to make these plastic CD V-742s to save money - dosimeters are cheaper and faster to fabricate out of plastic than metal. Not only that, the low effective atomic number of the plastic results in a flatter energy response! One problem was that the black plastic looked terrible when painted yellow. As such, Bendix was allowed to produce black civil defense dosimeters rather than the standard yellow kind. My understanding is that the plastic Bendix unit never went into full production, nor was it ever distributed. The example shown here was provided by Carl Siebentritt who worked on this dosimeter at Bendix.
The above is a more recent version of a CD V-742 dosimeter constructed of conductive plastic. It uses a carbon fiber instead of the standard quartz fiber. Made for FEMA by Victoreen (ca. 1987/1988). The idea for this new generation of plastic dosimeters originated with Carl Siebentritt at FEMA, the guy who worked on the Bendix version of a plastic dosimeter during the 1960s. Victoreen was awarded the first contract to produce them.
Approximately 75,000 of these were manufactured but there were issues with the quality control. Among other things, the dosimeter rejection rate due to Victoreen's internal QC program had driven the cost from the target $20 - $30 range up to $270 apiece. After one year, FEMA took the position that Victoreen had defaulted on the contract, so they sent the contract and the manufacturing equipment used by Victoreen to the Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) facility in Rolla, North Dakota. The latter was sometimes known as the William Langer Jewel Bearing facility. In 1996 it was privatized and became Arrow-Tech.

An early version of FEMA's plastic dosimeters was used by the US Army in the first Gulf War. Unfortunately, the plastic was permeable to air and the high humidity that was sometimes encountered in the gulf caused problems with the dosimeter insulators. The quick fix was to epoxy aluminum foil around the dosimeter barrels as a vapor barrier. Shortly thereafter, the original plastic formulation was replaced with an impermeable liquid crystal plastic polymer. The following photo shows a 0 - 600 roentgen plastic dosimeter with aluminum foil around the barrel (donated to the collection by FEMA). The range is the same as that of the CD V-746 dosimeter that came with the Bendix Family Radiation Measurement Kit. Arrow-Tech, the company that currently manufactures plastic dosimeters for FEMA, designates their 0 - 600 roentgen dosimeter as the Model 746.

Day 742 - when wrapping your aluminum foil around your portable radiation detector seems like a good idea.

Got a Moment? Listen to a 744-Hour-Long Radio Show

By Geeta Dayal March 9, 2012

Slow movies. Slow music. Slow art. The title of England’s intriguing month-long AV Festival, now in its fifth edition, is “As Slow as Possible” — a counterargument to the frenzy of the upcoming London 2012 Olympics, with its feverish tagline “Faster, Higher, Stronger.”

Attendees at the festival — which kicked off, slowly, on March 1 — can watch a car crash in slow motion (it will take the entire month for the Volkswagen to finish crashing, in a collision designed by artist Jonathan Schipper.) They can peruse a 20-volume set of hefty tomes created by Japanese artist On Kawara, called “One Million Years”; listen to vinyl records slowed down to a molasses crawl on Jem Finer’s hacked “slowplayer” turntable; sleep through an all-night concert (beds are provided) by Steven Stapleton of the legendary band Nurse With Wound; or sit through 70 hours of screenings of “slow cinema.”

But one festival highlight welcomes participants from anywhere in the world. It’s a 744-hour-long radio show curated by artist Vicki Bennett, also known as People Like Us. Listeners can tune in live to the broadcast, called “Radio Boredcast,” at any time, day or night, during the entire month of March.

Day 744. “As Slow as Possible” The fitting title for CBS. The tortoise of Boredband. The inchworm of iteration. The statue of site code. A train wreck in claymation. The titans of timelapse. Any... Day.. Now.
